Spectacular landscapes
VOLTERRA, with its 3,000 years of history, is a city of art whose origins can be traced from the Etruscan period right through to the 19th century. The tradition of alabaster craftsmanship is deeply rooted in Volterra and can be felt in every corner.
SAN GIMIGNANO, just 14 km from our farmhouse, is famous for its architecture and its beautiful medieval towers, which give the town a truly unique skyline; it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
FLORENCE, recognised as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with its wonders of Renaissance architecture; SIENA, the city of the Palio, whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a splendid example of medieval architecture.
And then there is PISA with its Leaning Tower, LUCCA with its 16th-century walls, and AREZZO with its tradition of goldsmithing. MONTERIGGIONI, about38 Km from Volterra, is one of the most famous fortified villages and is visited by around 90,000 people every year. The village was built by the Sienese in the early 1200s as a frontier stronghold against their enemy, Florence, and succeeded in safeguarding the independence of the Republic of Siena for centuries.
Its walls and castle are still imposing and majestic, like a crown, thanks to the walls studded with 14 towers, which are also mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy. Well worth a visit is the village of CERTALDO, the town of Boccaccio, author of the Decameron. His former residence overlooks the village’s main street, Via Boccaccio, where it now houses a museum, an important library and a centre dedicated to the study of Boccaccio.
